By the Editorial Team · reviewed against our sources · updated September 2026 · guidance, not a fatwa
Quick answer: Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its current market value, due once your gold — by itself, or together with your other wealth — reaches the nisab (87.48 g / about 7.5 tola of gold) and you have owned it for one lunar year (hawl). Enter your gold below by karat and currency; the calculator uses the live gold price to value the pure gold content and works out what you owe.

Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its current market value once your gold (alone or with other wealth) reaches nisab and a lunar year (hawl) has passed. Scholars differ on gold jewellery worn for personal use — Hanafi includes it; many others exempt it. Guidance only, not a fatwa.
Key points
- The Zakat rate on gold is 2.5% of its market value.
- The gold nisab is 87.48 g (≈ 7.5 tola / 11.66 g per tola).
- Value the pure gold content: 22k = 91.6%, 21k = 87.5%, 18k = 75% of the 24k price.
- Karat matters: a 22k item is worth less per gram than 24k.
- Jewellery worn for personal use — Hanafi includes it, many other scholars exempt it.
- If you also hold cash or silver, most scholars apply the lower silver nisab.
How to calculate Zakat on gold
There are three steps. First, add up the gold you own and note the karat of each piece. Second, convert it to its pure-gold value at today’s price — this is what the calculator above does automatically using the live 24k rate. Third, if the total reaches nisab and a lunar year has passed, pay 2.5% of that value. In short: weight × purity × live gold price × 2.5%.
What is the nisab for gold?
The gold nisab is 87.48 grams of pure gold (20 mithqāl), which is about 7.5 tola. If the gold you own reaches or exceeds this and you have held it for a full lunar year, Zakat is due. Note an important point of fiqh: if you own gold plus other zakatable wealth such as cash, savings or silver, most contemporary scholars combine everything and apply the silver nisab (612.36 g of silver), which is usually a lower threshold and means more people owe Zakat. Use our nisab page to see today’s live thresholds, or the full Zakat calculator for combined wealth.
Karat and purity — why it changes the answer
Gold prices are quoted for pure 24-karat gold. Jewellery is usually an alloy, so you pay Zakat on the pure gold content, not the gross weight:
| Karat | Purity | Pure gold in 10 g |
|---|---|---|
| 24k (999) | ≈ 99.9% | ≈ 9.99 g |
| 22k (916) | 91.6% | 9.16 g |
| 21k (875) | 87.5% | 8.75 g |
| 18k (750) | 75.0% | 7.50 g |
The calculator applies these factors for you — just enter the weight of each karat you own.
Tola, grams and common weights
Across South Asia and the Gulf, gold is often measured in tola. One tola equals 11.6638 grams. So the gold nisab of 87.48 g is about 7.5 tola. Switch the calculator to “Tola” to enter weights directly. For quick answers to common amounts, see: Zakat on 1 tola gold, 5 tola, 10 tola, and 100 grams.
A worked example
Suppose you own a 22k gold set weighing 4 tola (about 46.7 g). Its pure gold content is 46.7 × 0.916 ≈ 42.8 g. If the live 24k price is, say, the currency value shown in the tool, the calculator multiplies 42.8 g by that price and, because your gold alone (42.8 g) is below the 87.48 g gold nisab, it will tell you no Zakat is due on this gold by itself — but if you also hold cash or silver, you would cross the silver nisab and owe 2.5% on the combined total. This is exactly why the tool shows both the nisab check and a reminder to use the full calculator.
Do you pay Zakat on gold jewellery you wear?
This is the one genuine difference of opinion. The Hanafi school holds that Zakat is due on all gold you own, including jewellery worn for personal adornment. The Shāfiʿī, Mālikī and Ḥanbalī schools generally exempt jewellery that is genuinely kept and used for permitted personal wear, while gold held as savings or investment is always zakatable. Choose your view in the calculator; when a non-Hanafi view is selected and you mark the gold as personally worn, the tool treats it as exempt. When in doubt, the safer and more generous position is to pay. This is guidance, not a fatwa — confirm with a qualified scholar.
When is it due, and how do I pay?
Zakat on gold falls due once you have owned nisab-level wealth for one lunar year (hawl). Many people simply fix a Zakat date (often in Ramadan) and calculate every year on that date. You can pay the 2.5% in cash equivalent to the gold’s value — you do not have to give the gold itself. Save your result with the tool, or set a yearly reminder from the main Zakat calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Zakat on gold?
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its current market value, provided your gold (alone or with your other wealth) reaches the nisab and you have held it for one lunar year.
How do I calculate Zakat on gold?
Multiply the weight of your gold by its purity to get the pure gold content, value that at the live 24k price, and pay 2.5% of the total. The calculator does this automatically once you enter weight and karat.
What is the nisab for gold?
The gold nisab is 87.48 grams of pure gold, which is about 7.5 tola. If you also own cash or silver, most scholars apply the lower silver nisab instead.
Do I pay Zakat on gold jewellery I wear?
The Hanafi school includes worn jewellery; the Shafiʿi, Maliki and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery kept for genuine personal use, while investment gold is always zakatable.
Is Zakat on 22k gold different from 24k?
Yes. You pay on the pure gold content, so a 22k item (91.6% pure) is valued lower per gram than 24k. The calculator adjusts for karat automatically.
How much is Zakat on 1 tola of gold?
One tola is 11.6638 g. Its Zakat is 2.5% of that weight's market value — but 1 tola alone is below the gold nisab, so Zakat is only due if you also hold other wealth that crosses nisab.
What is 1 tola in grams?
One tola equals 11.6638 grams, so the 87.48 g gold nisab is about 7.5 tola.
When is Zakat on gold due?
Once you have owned nisab-level wealth for one full lunar year (hawl). Many people calculate on a fixed date each year, often in Ramadan.
