How the Hijri calendar works
The Islamic calendar is lunar: 12 months of 29–30 days, about 354 days a year — roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, which is why Islamic dates shift earlier each year. This matters for Zakat, which is due after one full lunar year (hawl).
